Welcoming Jason Birney
We are very pleased to announce that we are welcoming Jason Birney to Team Wrangler | Twisted X. Jason is well-known in the campdrafting industry. He and his family reside in St George, QLD, where he works on a cattle property and breeds and trains their own campdraft horses.
Jason grew up in Woodenbong, Northern Rivers, where his family owned a property. This is where it all began for Jason. He learned to ride early, and his dad, Bruce, would go to the local campdrafts. When Jason was old enough, he started drafting too. He became passionate about campdrafting and has never stopped.
In a recent interview with Jason, we asked how he would describe himself in five words. His response: Competitive, Dedicated, Hardworking, and Shy — at least until he gets to know people, he said with a laugh.
Jason credits his dad, Bruce, as one of his biggest influences. Later on, when he was older, he attended a Bruce McNaughton school and gained a lot of knowledge from it. He continued to ask Bruce questions about training methods. Jason says he’s been fortunate to have received advice from many great competitors throughout the years.
Winning the ABCRA Open Horse of the Year Title with a Romeo gelding has certainly been one of the most memorable moments of his campdraft career. When we ask our team here at Wrangler and Twisted X to show their support for the next generation of campdrafters, we always offer our professional riders the opportunity to give some words of wisdom for the journey ahead. Jason’s advice is: “Surround yourself with competitors you want to be like, and you will learn a lot.”
Here’s something most people wouldn’t know about Jason Birney: he used to play a lot of touch football throughout the week and was even selected for a representative team. However, he chose to attend a campdraft event instead. Apparently, that didn’t help his chances of being selected again, but it shows his dedication to campdrafting.
We can’t help ourselves — when catching up with our professional riders, we must ask for their best fashion tip. Jason’s response was: “Be clean, tidy, and don’t be afraid to spend a little extra on a good hat.” With western fashion trends being a main focus of our business, who can blame us for asking? It’s always interesting to hear people’s fashion ideas.
Jason and his family are excited for the upcoming campdraft season, and we hope to have a strong team of horses that will perform well in 2025.
